ON CIVILIZATION
When do you call a society a civilization. This term meant living up to human standards. Rules of behavior that distinguished “civilized man”, from the cave-men, nomads and hunter-gatherers.
Civilizations can be found all over the world. Sumeria in Iraq, which had a school system, public services like toilets and hot water. India knew civilizations that fought immense wars, using rockets and even atomic weapons. The Chinese civilization is a story of continuous warfare, before unity was established. We call Sparta a civilization, but its identity was based on warfare. All over the world, a civilization was recognized by its intellectual achievements, like geometry, writing and astronomy. The Sumerians kept records of the celestial movements and were the first civilization to observe an asteroid-impact. Egypt is famous for its art, like many other civilizations, and monuments. We still wonder, how these monuments were built. We tend to make things small. We talk about the Great Pyramid, while referring to an hughe complex of pyramids and temples. Lately underground tunnels were explored, connecting the monuments. These underground systems are definitively older, than the Gizeh-pyramids themselves. Civilization also has a link to human rights. Some kind of judgment must be performed. Especially concerning life and death. Then suddenly the picture changes.
All civilizations used calendars. The Persians did, the Hebrews, the Chinese and the Greek. So did the Maya. A Meso-American “civilization”, that flourished for a thousand years, to disappear around 800 AD. and abandoned their cities and temples.
The Maya knew several calendars. A normal 360 days calendar, a personal calendar of 260 days and a “long-count”-calendar, which had a prophetic character. On 21 December 2012, at 11.11 pm., this calendar ends. Will the world come to an end? But that is not my point. I am talking about the concept of civilization. World-wide, what we call civilizations, were societies based on human and animal sacrifice. Especially the Maya. Human sacrifice was necessary to keep the Gods satisfied and the world going. If these stories are only partly true, thousands of fellow-Indians, were slaughtered and their bodies were thrown down the temple-stairs. The Maya disappeared because they ran out of victims and started to slaughter their own. Warfare is a second form of human sacrifice. It dominated the civilized world for some 4000 years.

Museum 't
Behouden Huys dankt zijn naam aan het onderkomen dat de bemanning van de Willem
Barendtz bouwde voor de beruchte overwintering op Nova Zembla. In hetzelfde
museum is nu een tentoonstelling te zien over 'De Lutine', het schip dat in 1799
in de nacht van 9 op 10 oktober op een zandbank tussen Terschelling en Vlieland
vastliep.
Het waren spannende tijden want in datzelfde jaar werden aan de westkust van Nederland verschillende invasiepogingen door Engelse oorlogsschepen ondernomen. Het Engelse, op de Fransen buitgemaakte, schip De Lutine (wat plaaggeest of kwelduivel betekent) werd regelmatig in deze strijd ingezet. Deze keer echter voer het schip uit de haven van Great Yarmouth met een grote hoeveelheid goud, zilver en feestvierende notabelen met de opdracht deze lading veilig naar Hamburg te brengen, waar op dat moment een enorme economische crisis heerste.

Naar de oorzaak van de scheepsramp kan men blijven raden. Naar elk schip dat zonk werd een grondig onderzoek ingesteld en de mogelijke schuldige(n) werden zwaar gestraft. Verhalen hierover zijn terug te vinden in de verschillende archieven, zoals die van de Admiraliteit. Over De Lutine echter is zo goed als niets terug te vinden.
De conservator van het Behouden Huys, de heer G. de Weerdt heeft in zijn zoektocht naar de geschiedenis van De Lutine wel een aantal opmerkelijke ontdekkingen gedaan. Er is altijd sprake geweest van een enkele overlevende, namelijk de notaris Chabraque. En in de scheepsjournalen van de schepen die tijdens de ramp in de buurt waren staat inderdaad beschreven dat er een man werd gered. Zijn identiteit echter bleef onbekend, terwijl op de monsterlijst van 18 oktober 1799 van het schip Isis wel een naam voorkomt. Dit was ene Jhon Rogers, een volmatroos afkomstig van De Lutine. Over Chabraque staat verder niets vermeld.
Merkwaardig genoeg deed de Admiraliteit geen moeite om Jhon Rogers naar Engeland te halen om informatie te geven over de scheepsramp. Later verdwijnt de volmatroos spoorloos, waardoor ook zijn verhaal over het zinken van De Lutine en zijn kostbare lading in de vergetelheid geraakt. En dan zijn er nog de weggesneden bladzijden over deze periode uit het journaal van een van de schepen die waarschijnlijk bij reddingpogingen betrokken is geweest...
Was er sprake van een doofpotaffaire? Mocht verzekeringsmaatschappij Lloyd geen bewijzen van het een of ander in handen krijgen, zodat ze niet hoefden uit te betalen? Alle duikpogingen in de verschillende archieven hebben, net zoals bij de meeste duikpogingen om de goudstaven boven water halen, weinig opgeleverd.
De tentoonstelling in 't Behouden Huys laat naast een Panoramashow over de ongelukkige reis ook het een en ander over de interessante duikgeschiedenis tot aan nu toe zien. En in het boek De Lutine 1799, geven negen auteurs beschrijvingen over de raadselachtige ondergang van een schip vol goud, zilver en notabelen.

Jezus werd in de Jordaan gedoopt. Op dat moment verscheen hem de Heilige Geest en begonnen de drie jaren van zijn regentschap op aarde, totdat de Kruisdood op Golgotha hier een einde aan maakte.
De doop werd verricht door Johannes, een zwervende preker en een zonderling, die in de woestijn leefde. Hij waarschuwde voor de ondergang van de Joden, omdat ze zich van de oude wetten, rituelen en gebruiken hadden afgewend. De toorn van God zou losbarsten. Deze voorspelling kwam uit toen zo'n 40 jaar later Jeruzalem door de Romeinen werd ingenomen, geplunderd en de Tempel, het belangrijkste Joodse heiligdom, in brand werd gestoken.
Johannes, bijgenaamd de Doper, maakte zich, net als Jezus niet geliefd bij de autoriteiten. De Romeinse regent Herodes Antipas nam hem gevangen en Johannes werd daarna in de kerkers van Herodes' paleis opgesloten. Het was niet de bedoeling, dat hij daar voorlopig uit zou komen.
Tijdens een banket met vrienden beloofde Herodes aan Salome, zijn dochter, haar elke wens te vervullen. Opgestookt door haar jaloerse moeder vroeg Salome om het hoofd van Johannes de Doper. Hetgeen geschiedde.
Maar wat gebeurde er met Salome?
Niet lang daarna leed Jeruzalem onder een zeer koude winter. Begeleid door bedienden en soldaten reisde Salome terug naar huis. Ze moest hiervoor de Jordaan oversteken. De geschiedenis vermeldt niet of het nu volgende drama zich op de plek afspeelde waar Johannes Jezus had gedoopt. In ieder geval, tijdens het oversteken van de Jordaan viel Salome in de rivier. Haar zware kleding trok haar naar beneden. Maar voordat zij in de diepte verdween, bevroor het water zo snel, dat de drenkeling werd onthoofd.

Nazi's wilden Churchill doden met explosief in reep chocola
De Duitsers hadden in 1943 een vergevorderd plan om de Britse premier Winston Churchill om te brengen met een explosief dat was verstopt in een reep chocola. Dat blijkt volgens de Daily Mail uit een pas opgedoken document.

DENIAL
De discussie naar aanleiding van de “executie-foto's” begint“denial-trekjes” te krijgen. Het blijkt duidelijk, dat we ons koloniale verleden, geen plek kunnen geven. We ontkennen daarmee de participatie van de “Republiek” in de slavenhandel. De uitbuiting en onderdrukking gedurende honderden jaren en de daarbij gebruikte machtsmiddelen: slavernij, represaille en standrecht. We hebben Indië niet verdedigd, maar keerden direct na de oorlog terug. “Business as usual”. Dit heeft talloze Indonesiërs het leven gekost (Surabaya, Sulawesi).
Het is geen geschiedenis om trots op te zijn, maar we zullen met deze erfenis iets positiefs moeten doen, in plaats van het te bagatelliseren. Nog dagelijks kun je deze plaatjes, ergens op aarde, schieten.

The two pictures, that surfaced recently, showing an execution and it's result, resulted in a heavy debate. All forms of denial are uttered. Some hypocrites suggested, that locals were responsible for the killing. They immediately remove the context. On a higher level, everybody accepts it, but you when see your neighbor pulling the trigger to shoot some-one, from behind, in a ditch. Worse even, this whole colonial restoration after World War 2, was planned and executed by the queen, Wilhelmina, entrepreneurs and the military. They should have known better, but they did not. This makes them responsible and if it happened in this century, the people responsible would be put to trial. In “The Hague” of all places. But atrocities don't fade away and they grow, instead of disappearing. The loyalty of some groups, like the Moluccans and the Papua.s, is exploited till this day. The pain is still felt and will grow over the generations. But we neglect this and the government c.s. wants to keep it this way. But like I said before. Everything will be revealed and we will have to deal with it. What is we don't? The result will be an apocalyptic scenario, where millions will starve to death, while other areas will be devastated by earthquakes or flooding. War will break out over tiny islands or minute border-differences. The economy and social security will be shaken. But remember: the world around us, mirrors us. It reacts to our actions, to our emotions and our goals. It also reacts to the ways we try to obtain them. We live in the Kali Yuga; materialistic, rational and mainly acting by way of explosions. Matter and live don't like that. In the Bible, NT, an age of knowledge is prophesied, laying the base for a spiritual quantum-jump. This development we also see with animals. You better not feed your dog, from the tree of knowledge. It may suddenly realize, how we treat their fellow-animals. Your pet may attack you.

VLISSINGEN - In het Dokje van Perry in Vlissingen staat weer water. Dat betekent dat de restauratie van het oudste droogdok van Nederland bijna is voltooid. Het dokje is gebouwd in de jaren 1704-1705 naar een ontwerp van de Engelsman John Perry.
Sinds 1964 is het een rijksmonument, maar die status heeft niet verhinderd dat het droogdok in 1974 onder de grond is gewerkt. Het Dokje van Perry is in 2010 uitgegraven en toen is ook een begin gemaakt met de restauratie.
Het enige dat nog ontbreekt is de schipdeur. Die wordt naar verwachting in augustus geplaatst.

Most recently, Bahrain's "Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs" and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt's new president, Muhammad Morsi, to "destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not."
This is a reference to the Muslim Prophet Muhammad's companion, Amr bin al-As and his Arabian tribesmen, who invaded and conquered Egypt circa 641. Under al-As and subsequent Muslim rule, many Egyptian antiquities were destroyed as relics of infidelity. While most Western academics argue otherwise, according to early Muslim writers, the great Library of Alexandria itself--deemed a repository of pagan knowledge contradicting the Koran--was destroyed under bin al-As's reign and in compliance with Caliph Omar's command.

Duikers van defensie hebben vandaag in de buurt van Vlissingen mogelijk restanten van het historische vlaggenschip Walcheren opgedoken. Dat heeft het ministerie van Defensie vanmiddag bekendgemaakt.
Het schip verging in 1689 in het zicht van de haven van Vlissingen.
Op verzoek van de provincie Zeeland begon defensie een onderzoek in de Scheldemonding. Dit onderzoek leidde tot de aanname dat de Walcheren tot zinken kwam ter hoogte van de voormalige ingang van de Nieuwe Haven. Op die plek waren veel verstoringen in de bodem te zien, zo bleek uit sonaronderzoek en magnetisch onderzoek. Het schip verging in 1689 in het zicht van de haven van Vlissingen.

WHAT REALLY KILLED THE DINOSAURS
For more than 150 million years, dinosaurs dominated Earth. They were so successful that other animal groups – mammals included – had little chance of playing anything more than secondary roles.
Then, 65 million years ago, the dinosaurs vanished from the world forever. Did they meet a quick and catastrophic end, or did they fade away gradually?
In the search for answers to what killed the dinosaurs, scientists have looked beyond fossils. Geological evidence also holds clues and has contributed to many hypotheses, working explanations of how dinosaurs may have become extinct.
The extinction mystery is far from a simple “whodunit.” The same piece of evidence is sometimes subject to multiple interpretations. And, as yet, there is no obvious “smoking gun,” no piece of evidence that strongly supports only one hypothesis while disproving all others. So what do we know about dinosaur extinction, and how do we know it?
Scientific evidence and observation are the building blocks of hypotheses. Initially, the same evidence and observations may support different hypotheses. As more evidence becomes available, some hypotheses are substantiated, others ae disproved, and new ones are formed.
A dinosaur extinction hypothesis is a testable statement describing factors that may have contributed to the dinosaurs’ demise and how long the process may have taken. Evidence, observation, and experimentation can serve to support or disprove a hypothesis. Regardless of its ultimate acceptance or rejection, though, a valid hypothesis provides direction for future scientific inquiry.

Eerste foto's ooit van executies Nederlands leger in Indië

Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis zijn foto's opgedoken van executies die zeer waarschijnlijk zijn uitgevoerd door het Nederlandse leger tijdens de politionele acties in voormalig Nederlands-Indië. De foto's komen uit het privéalbum van een soldaat die diende als dienstplichtige in Nederlands-Indië.

Nooit eerder
Deskundigen van het oorlogsinstituut NIOD en van het Nederlandse Instituut voor Militaire Historie (NIMH) zeggen dergelijke foto's nooit eerder te hebben gezien. 'Het zijn geen alledaagse foto's en het is beslist niet zo dat iedere Indiëmilitair dit soort foto's mee naar huis bracht', aldus een medewerker van het NIMH. Ook bij het NIOD zijn soortgelijke foto's onbekend, zegt René Kok. 'We hebben heel veel albums hier. Je zit te wachten op het moment dat zo'n foto opduikt en dat is nu. Eerder heb ik dit nooit gezien.'
De geraadpleegde historici twijfelen niet aan de echtheid. De exacte plaats noch de toedracht van de executie is bekend. Mogelijk levert nader onderzoek meer details op.
De maker is een soldaat uit Enschede. Hij is inmiddels overleden. Hij werd uitgezonden in 1947, kort voor de eerste politionele actie, en hij is pas in 1950 teruggehaald, na de soevereiniteitsoverdracht. Hij diende bij de artillerie. In de Korpsgeschiedenis van zijn onderdeel wordt geen melding gemaakt van executies. Vermoedelijk heeft de artillerie alleen bijstand verleend aan de Speciale Troepen of infanteristen, die wel executies uitvoerden.
Bekend zijn de executies in de Javaanse kampong Rawagede en op Zuid-Celebes. De nabestaanden van de slachtoffers van Rawagede werd vorig jaar een schadevergoeding toegekend. De staat moet nog reageren op de aanklacht die is ingediend tegen de standrechtelijke executies op Zuid-Celebes. Hoeveel Indonesiërs bij beide acties precies zijn omgekomen, is niet bekend.
De soldaat heeft nooit ruchtbaarheid gegeven aan het bestaan van de foto's. Zijn albums zouden ook nooit zijn opgemerkt, als ze niet onlangs waren gevonden in een vuilcontainer in Enschede. Wie ze daarin heeft gegooid, is niet bekend. De eigenaar van de albums was kinderloos en zou de laatste jaren alleen hebben geleefd.
Vuilcontainer
Een medewerker van het Gemeentearchief van Enschede zag de oude albums liggen in de vuilcontainer en hij besloot ze eruit te vissen. De gemeente Enschede verzamelt vaker foto's om de levensloop van de eigen inwoners te kunnen illustreren. De albums zouden alsnog terzijde zijn gelegd, als de archivarissen niet waren gealarmeerd door foto's van een gevangenentransport. Op dat moment besloten ze het album nog eens door te nemen waarbij ze stuitten op de foto's van de executies.
Onlangs riepen drie historische instituten de regering op opnieuw onderzoek te doen naar de politionele acties tussen 1945 en 1950, om te kunnen begrijpen wat voor oorlog er in Indonesië is gevoerd. Het kabinet heeft nog niet gereageerd.

- July 3, 2012 - A mystery city lies in Syria’s deserts, one older than the pyramids -- but the war-torn location is stopping archaeologists from decoding its riddles.
Fragments of stone tools, stone circles and lines on the ground, and even evidence of tombs seem to lie in the desert near the ancient monastery of Deir Mar Musa, 50 miles north of Damascus, archaeologist Robert Mason of the Royal Ontario Museum stated. He likened the formations to “Syria’s Stonehenge.”
“What it looked like was a landscape for the dead and not for the living,” Mason mentioned Wednesday in the course of a presentation at Harvard University’s Semitic Museum, according to the University publication the Harvard Gazette.
He made the find throughout a 2009 trip and is eager to return and further explore the site. But he says regional conflicts make such a return trip practically impossible.
“It’s something that requirements a lot more work and I don’t know if that’s ever going to come about.”

The monastery itself, also called the Monastery of Saint Moses the Abyssinian, was built in the late 4th or early 5th century, he stated, and consists of numerous frescoes from the 11th and 12th century depicting Christian saints and Judgment Day. He told the audience at Harvard that he believes it was originally a Roman watchtower, partially destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt.
But the desert puzzle is much older.
Bits of tools Mason found nearby recommend the mystery he discovered in the desert is considerably older than the monastery. It may date to the Neolithic Period or early Bronze Age, 6,000 to 10,000 years ago, the Gazette mentioned.
Egypt’s oldest pyramid, the Great Pyramid of Giza, was built about 4,500 years ago.
Mason also saw corral-like stone formations called “desert kites,” which would have been used to trap gazelles and other animals. The desert around the monastery is hardly a verdant pasture -- “very scenic, if you like rocks,” Mason reportedly mentioned -- but was probably greener a couple of millennia ago, the archaeologist explained.
Like Indiana Jones exploring Italy’s museums in “The Last Crusade,” Mason hopes to return to the monastery to excavate beneath the church’s principal altar -- he believes he’ll find an entrance to underground tombs there.
He also hopes to return to strange stone formations he identified in the desert, which he dubbed “Syria’s Stonehenge.

July 4, 2012 - The discovery of a 500-year-old map in a German university library just a couple of days ago ended up becoming the oldest — and the first — global sketch to mention the name “America.”
Experts assumed that there were only four copies of German cartographer Martin Waldseemueller’s maps, but the discovery of a fifth at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich is a bombshell of sorts. It is believed that Waldseemueller, who died in 1522, produced the map himself.
His global drawings hold key significance. One of the four was sold at an auction for $1 million back in 2005, showcasing just how valuable the maps are in terms of historical value and intrigue. According to the university, the other three are in Minneapolis, Offenburg and in the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
The fifth map was discovered by a bibliographer who was operating on revising the library’s catalogue. It was apparently “nestled amongst two printed works on geometry.

THE SECOND 100-YEAR WAR
Immediately after the defeat of Japan, the Netherlands sent troops to Indonesia. When this tropical paradise (economically, culturally and natural richness (oil, wood, rubber, coffee and tea) was conquered by the Japanese, this occupation ended another one. Since the 17th century the Dutch “owned” the archipelago. The trade on the East Indies, brought huge profits to Amsterdam. Dutch traders owned enormous plantations of exportable goods, while the locals did not have enough to eat and babies died. Collateral damage.
The Dutch occupation by the Nazis and their reign of death and terror had just ended a few months before. In 1945 World War 2 did not end. After a bloody fight for independence the Dutch left Indonesia. With pain in their heart. But they had not realized that the Western countries had lost a lot of “face”. Their position of power brought down by Asians. But did World War 1 end. Yes it officially ended on 11.11 hours. Americans were fighting till the end. And soldiers died till the end. Out of this Great War rose the Soviet Union, but not after a bloody civil war. The Reds again the White, communists against tsarists. This last party was openly supported by the former Allies. Italy became a fascist state and it wanted to restore their influence on the “Mare Romanum”. So they occupied parts of Northern Africa (Libia, oil) and modern-day Ethiopia. Haille Selassie, emperor of Abyssinia, delivered a dramatic speech to the United Nations about the atrocities of the Italian army. In Germany too a new militant state rose, Nazi Germany. Japan attacked Korea and China and were on their way to “Empire”.
In 1939 France and England declared war on Germany, after their march into Poland. Before that the Nazis had brought, without any resistance, Austria and Tsjecho-Slowacia “Heim ins Reich”. It was a silent war for the Allies, but not for Poland. They were attacked by the Russians and the country was simply cut in two.
After this 41/2 years of world wide warfare. Millions of people die. This is the first war where the civilians are target themselves. The atomic bomb brought Japan on its knees, but it did not end the war.
The Dutch fought the Indonesians in New Guinea, the French the Vietnamese and the Belgians fought in the Congo-arrea. The first major clash was Korea, which led to a divided country, that is heading towards extremes (atomic confrontation?) . The same “solution” was used for Vietnam. After years of battle and 60.00 American dead, the US left Saigon. Vietnam was united again. You win some, you loose some, so to say.
To make a long story short war, bombardments, civil strife, peace keeping and terrorist attacks have become a “normal” ingredient” of our day-to-day life.
The “100 year-war” is repeating itself, but with increasing intensity.
It a peace rally a young girl was wearing a sign that said: “I was born after the war and want to stay that way”. Meant was World War 2, but I am inclined to think: “Which War .”
WAR OF THE WORLD
The series begins with how the first World War ignited fires of racial animosity in people, exploited by new and more terrible nation-states that were far more preoccupied with national and racial purity. It was the beginning of an age of genocide.

Gaat Lenin ooit de grond in?

Het blijft een prachtig gebouw, Lenins mausoleum op het Rode Plein - constructivistische stijl, grote rood-marmeren blokken, met de zwart-marmeren façade waarop in koeieletters 'LENIN' gegrift staat. Hoewel het tijdelijk dicht is voor een verbouwing is het de favoriete plek voor toeristen om zich op het Rode Plein te laten vereeuwigen.
Chinezen, Fransen, Amerikanen - maar vooral Russen uit de provincie, voor wie een bezoek aan de opgebaarde Lenin verplichte kost is. Anders ben je niet echt in Moskou geweest.Maar de afgelopen twintig jaar ligt Lenin er niet meer zo rustig bij als hij gewend was. Eens in de zoveel tijd staat een voorname Rus op die meent dat de grote revolutionair beter begraven kan worden - net als andere stervelingen. Het begon al in 1989, toen de oud-dissident Joeri Chariyakin in het Sovjet-parlement onthulde dat Lenin zelf naast zijn moeder begraven wilde worden. Ophef! Verontwaardiging! Lenins nichtje Olga Oeljanova moest eraan te pas komen om te zeggen dat dit een veile leugen was.
Sindsdien herhaalt de discussie zich om de paar jaar met de voorspelbaarheid van het gestage heen en weer draaien van een wasprogramma. Maar de maatschappij verandert, dus elke hernieuwde discussie is pikanter dan de vorige.
